Unfortunately the only way to reliably test if it works is on a drive with known bad sectors.

It is important to remember that any change will affect all the hard drives. To everybody else, come on people, submit those specs! Then while you rebuild-- which can take hours to days in heavy load scenarios-- you are intensely vulnerable to a 2nd disk failure. As you can see, mixing a desktop disk with a raid controller can produce unwanted results.
